What is Geographic Information System (GIS)?

Geographic Information System (GIS), is a science that studies the structure and dynamics of earth, its elements, land, water bodies, and other resources. It mostly involves digital mapping to measure distances between locations, people and activities. GIS specialists produce geographical maps, geological charts, select field sites, conduct active and passive remote sensing for data collection, detect and monitor the physical characteristics of a region, calculate the reflected and emitted radiation of various man-made and natural events on earth. In short, GIS professionals undertake many tasks which aid research and operations in the fields of Geography, Geology, Meteorology, Oceanography, Environmental sciences, Astronomy, Maritime monitoring, Human Security and Geo-spatial Intelligence and earth sciences.

A geographic information system (GIS) helps in gathering, managing, and analyzing data used by a variety of industries for monitoring, surveillance, and decision making. Rooted in the science of geography it uses cartography, spatial modeling, and mapping as the foundation for its programming and functionality.

GIS is a good academic option for many who are interested in studying subjects related to Geography, Geology or Earth Sciences.
