What is Epidemiology?

Epidemiology is an ancient science dating back to the mid-18th century. It is a discipline aimed at defining disease determinants and human population health quality.

The object of study defines epidemiology as “identification of factors that alter the occurrence of health events in people belonging to different age groups, communities, geographical regions, and lifestyles’’. Epidemiology is often connected with infectious diseases because the rise in the incidence of infectious diseases was initially referred to as an epidemic of a disease. Cholera and Plague were amongst the first diseases to be studied under epidemiological methods. However, now, through epidemiological methods, all illnesses or health occurrences are researched and these techniques are constantly evolving to meet new requirements. The Epidemiological study systems are used to assess the adequacy of a certain class of medicines and the appropriacy of a range of treatments in neutralizing or lessening the impact of physical disorders, diseases or symptoms on a specific target category or subject chosen for research.

It utilizes demographic strategies, statistical methods, quantitative techniques, combinatorics, stratification, and a varied range of health data to draw inferences regarding the frequency and instances of a particular health outcome.

It is a public health discipline instilled with the spirit that the research information should be used to promote and protect people’s health. Hence, it involves both science and medical practices.

Examples of applied epidemiology may be:

· The monitoring of epidemiology reports of communicable diseases in the community

· The study of whether a specific component influences your risk of developing a particular medical condition

· Evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of healthcare awareness programs on the population

· Analysis of historical trends and current data to project future public healthcare needs
