What do Virologists do?

The core duty of a virologist is to prepare, conduct and oversee the study of microorganisms. This research work is done with the help of scientific equipment in a virology lab. They usually study bacteria which is a host to a certain virus by applying different levels of temperatures, moisture or conditioning to know its response. In this way, they can infer upon the contribution, growth, and spreading of the virus which eventually help them understand its evolution in the human population.

In university set-ups or large research facilities, a team of researchers is supervised by Virologists. The team includes Biology technologists, Immunologists, lab technicians/ assistants, etc. In larger R&D departments or healthcare research centers, Virologists spend much time in coordinating, planning, supervising the workflow and not necessarily participate in it. Training and coaching the staff for types of equipment, experiments, and observations to be conducted become the most important part of their work.

Virologists also work in hospitals, healthcare research centers, or large medical clinics by collaborating with medical staff dealing with a variety of cases on the field. Once a viral case is under a doctors observation samples are collected from such patients and studied by Virologists.
