Statement of Purpose

Fragrances hold a special place in our lives, and I was always drawn to natural fragrances. It is fascinating how our memories can connect fragrances with events. At one point, I realized that fragrances could noticeably affect my mood. I spent a major part of my life in a semi-urban area where I hardly had access to branded perfumes or skin-care products. When I shifted to a metro city, I smelled a Gucci perfume for the first time, and a sense of tranquility rushed through me. Later, I used a variety of international skincare products and perfumes to understand the therapeutic importance of fragrances. Considering my passion for aromas, I was open to exploring mainstream career options in the perfumery industry. Hence, with a Bachelor’s in Chemistry and a few years of experience in an aromatic chemicals company, I am convinced this is an ideal time to pursue an experiential course such as the Master’s in Perfumery/ Scent Design and Creation offered by your premium institute.

Throughout my Bachelor’s in Chemistry from the University of Delhi, my project work helped me understand the basics of different chemical compositions used across different industries and how the final product is derived from the chemicals. I learned the role of multiple chemicals in food, cosmetics, skincare, and pharmaceutical products. Experimenting with chemical formulations to improve the outcome has been my favorite part of the lab work. In theory, some of the subjects I enjoyed learning were Chemical Bonding, Equations, and Stoichiometry, Solutions and Mixtures, Electronegativity, Oxidation numbers, etc.

After finishing my degree in 2018, I started my career at Bombay Perfumery, Mumbai, India as an intern. I interned for the first six months, from September 2018 to February 2019. I was absorbed as a Junior Lab Technician. Bombay Perfumery manufactures a range of aroma candles, perfumes, luxury spa, and massage oils. I was responsible for receiving and processing samples to identify suitability. I also prepared testing samples using various types of laboratory equipment. Apart from this, I performed laboratory testing, labeled specimens, sent fragrance samples to the appropriate department, and maintained accurate laboratory records. My team and I also refilled and maintained material inventory and lab supplies. We regularly cleaned up the labs scrapped perfume/ raw materials/ products. I reported to the Laboratory Manager. I worked here until 2021 March.

In April 2021, I joined Perfumetrix, in Mumbai, India, as a Sr. Lab Assistant. I worked in a huge laboratory and handled a team of 5 lab technicians. I worked on the latest equipment and was involved in a scent designing project for six months. This project taught me the basic requirements of designing long-lasting deodorants. I enjoyed working with the company’s perfume designing team and strived to learn as much as possible. This project inspired me to study for a full-time Master in Perfumery.

Thereafter, I completed an online course, ‘Fundamentals of Perfume Creation: Foundation’, from the Experimental Perfume Club. I learned how to recognize 42 perfumery ingredients (natural and synthetic) and classify the ingredients; I also understood combination, harmony, and contrast in a formula.

Apart from my studies, I worked in an NGO, ‘Vanaspati House’, which helps tribals from the interiors of India manufacture skincare products from the best ingredients that are naturally available in their region. I was involved in the online marketing of these products through their website and e-commerce websites such as Amazon, Nykaa, and Beautyblender.

Considering that perfume is one of the most in-demand accessories, I can see this niche industry's scope for potential candidates like me. I want to climb the ladder gradually from a lab technician to becoming a Scent Designer with a globally reputed perfume brand. I want to target the upscale markets by designing a range of perfumes and fragrances that suit every personality, weather, and occasion. Perfumery is no more just the mixing of chemicals and solutions; it is more about connecting with the customers through notes that deliver an experience instead of a product. I wish to work with French perfume brands as the best perfumes in the world come from France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. I expect to gain hands-on experience while studying this course and using my creativity and expertise in this industry.
