Question: If you could meet with any person, living or dead, for an hour, who would it be, and what would you say to them?

This indeed is an interesting and intriguing subject, which throws up a multitude of possible choices. Many people changed the world I would have liked to meet, but this one is more about the person who changed my world instead – my late mother.

If I were given an hour to meet and speak with her, I would take a slow walk down memory lane, savoring all the quality reminiscences that I have learned to remember her by since she departed. There will also be some matters I would like to say to her.

First of all, I would like her to know how my life has shaped up after she passed away. With the eternal motivation she always gave me, I was inspired to excel in whatever I set out to do. She always gave me a very positive image of life, that every problem has a solution built into it, and every calamity leads to an equally rewarding opportunity. But most importantly, she enabled and encouraged me, sometimes even forcefully pushing me toward following my career dreams. At the time, the hospitality industry was still in its nascent stages. Everyone was more interested in pursuing higher education in traditional occupation areas such as accounting, business, science, and humanities. But it was only my mother, who recognized my passion and interest in hospitality education, and made sure nothing stood in my way except for my own capabilities.

It was majorly due to her persistence, coupled with my passion for this career option, that I was able to secure admission to the best culinary institute in the United States of America. Tragically, she passed away even before I could start studying in the field she so much wanted to see me excel in.

I would like to continue that conversation with her and let her know how much her efforts paid off for her son, who is just at the cusp of culminating his term in culinary school and is now aspiring to go to the next level with a Masters degree, applying diligently with the same fervor that she had imbibed in me a few years ago.

I would like to tell my mother that had it not been for her belief in her son’s interests, that seemed more like a hobby for most skeptics, and I would never have been confident enough to step up and conquer my fears and trepidations. Anything I tell her about her role in my life will always be absolutely meager compared to her active engagement in shaping my life to one that I will always cherish, which is why her memories will remain in my heart forever. I will end my conversation with her by asking her a very tearful and poignant question, to which I know I will never get an answer – “Mom, why did you leave me so soon? I wanted you to be with me every step of the way, but you left me just when I needed you to be a part of my success.”
