  • Sweden a North European- Scandinavian country with a population of 9,716,962, is bordered by Norway to the West, Finland to the East, and the Baltic Sea to the South. Sweden Education System

  • Sweden’s educational system offers pristine environment for global students. The working language of the country is Swedish but 85 % Swedish can speak fluent English, hence, international students have a great scope to settle down in this country.
  • The academic calendar is divided into two semesters:
    1. Autumn semester which begins- end of August, end- mid-January, with a break in December.
    2. Spring semester begins- mid-January, end- beginning of June.

  • Universities offer programs according to the European standards of education. It includes Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs.
    1. Bachelor’s programs, known as undergraduate programs, enroll students from upper secondary school and are usually to be completed in 3 to 4 years. Master’s programs, also known as graduate programs, are extended specializations of subjects studied during Bachelor’s and can be 1.5 to 3 years long
    2. PhD programs, known as doctoral programs, are research degrees which involve 5 to 8 years of work towards a thesis / dissertation. The duration and setup of PhD programs vary between universities.
  • A number of courses in a particular field of study at a university lead to a specific degree. Sometimes Courses are known as modules, which are the building blocks of every program. Each semester, students follow one large module along with several other smaller modules.
  • It is also possible to apply for admission to some courses directly instead of applying to a full degree program. You are only registered for a specific module if you enroll for a course instead of a full degree. If you apply for a full program, you will be enrolled for all the modules included in the total duration of your program.
  • The Ministry of Education and Research controls the system of higher education. State grants are offered to higher education based on the number of students and their achievements along with extra remuneration for the various other activities carried out in the interest of student welfare. Autonomous institutions receiving governmental grants are not allowed to charge tuition fees. Few institutions which do not receive grants charge tuition fees. These institutions are called private universities.
  • The Swedish Higher Education Authority supervises the quality of higher education and degree authorization of state universities. It works out legal efficiency analysis and monitors the statistics of higher education. The Swedish Council of Higher Education administers admission to universities and also recognizes and promotes participation in international collaborations.
  • The National Board of Student Aid is accountable for repayment of student loans and allotment of educational finances to international and local students. Mostly all universities follow the ECTS credit system.On the whole Sweden is a lavish country to study in and one can sense its richness in every aspect.
