Traits of an Engineering Major

 

Engineering majors share many traits in common. For example, they tend to be very practical individuals that are good at making their own choices and decisions for their future career. They are also more likely to have strong verbal communication skills with a love for math and science. Engineering students have unique traits in comparison to other majors at West Virginia University. For example, an engineering major enjoys taking on new tasks that challenge their skills and knowledge in the field such as an internship or research project. At the same time, they have a need for precision and efficiency because of their ability to solve complex problems during their careers. An Engineering Major is typically someone who is practical, likes to solve problems, enjoys learning new things and are team-oriented. They usually work as a part of a cohesive group that pushes each other to reach their goals. 

An Engineering Major will typically be more active in the community and take on many leadership roles. They also tend to be very creative people that look for opportunities to express themselves artistically. Many students are unsure what they are going to major in their college careers. It is advised that students have a general idea of the field they may want to go into and study the traits of successful engineers.

 

Who should not study an Engineering Major

 

Before you decide to study engineering, you should take the time to research the field. Engineering is a broad term, and it could be too difficult for someone who doesn't have an affinity for math or science. Students should also consider their personal interests to make a conscious decision about which discipline is best for them. Some majors are not eligible to study with an Engineering major. It is not a good idea to study an Engineering Major if you are not academically inclined or you have poor study habits. Without proper guidance, students may spend too much time on the subjects they are less interested in and not enough time on their favorite subjects. Engineering is one of the fastest growing fields in the US. However, many people still have a lot of misconceptions about it because they don't understand what an engineering major entails. If you are not sure if you want to study an engineering major, make sure that you have done foundational math and science courses, as well as economics and sociology. If you're not interested in being an engineer, consider any major that doesn't require a math or science prerequisite. If you know you want to study engineering and have the math and science prerequisites, but are still unsure if this is the right path for you, talk to your advisor.
