WHERE DO I STUDY? FRANCE OR IRELAND?

The academic year, in France, usually begins in September and finishes in May or June. The holidays are generally seen in July and August.

Duration of Programs:

In Ireland, the bachelor’s degree courses are conducted over 3 years and master’s degree programs are conducted generally for 1-2 years. Students can also study for 3 years to get an honors bachelor's degree and 1 year for the postgraduate diploma. Doctoral degree programs usually go up to 4 years of study. France offers three types of degrees such as license, master, and doctorate. License degree programs range for about three years (six semesters). Master Degree programs range for about 2 years (four semesters). Doctorate programs range for about three years.

 

University Structure and Organization:

In Ireland, universities, colleges, private and independent colleges, institutes of technology are all autonomous and self-governing but they are enormously state-funded. There are seven universities in Ireland and all of them are monitored by a statutory body. Private institutions provide higher education but they get 90% of

their income from state funds. Students can select the course and attend the classes regularly and once they complete their exams, they can get their degrees. France has two types of higher education. One is public universities and the other one is Grandes Écoles. Three years of study are required to get a license degree. Graduates of baccalauréat level + 2 years of validated study are admitted into Grandes Écoles whereas all other universities accept baccalauréat graduates alone.

Finding Accommodation:

In France, students can find accommodation in crous, residence, university-owned accommodation, and other few places. The cost of renting is around 200 EUR - 300 EUR per month but the cost of renting depends on the location and the luxury students choose. Estate agents can also help in finding accommodations for students. In Ireland, there are huge options for accommodations. There are university accommodations, hostels, hotels, self-catering holiday homes, guest houses, accommodations associations, etc. Accommodations fees depend on the location and the luxury of the accommodations.

 

Assignment and Grading:

The grading system in France is standardized. Assignments, tests, and exams are evaluated for 20 marks. A mark of 10 is the pass mark and below that is considered as fail. A mark between 10 - 11.99 is considered a simple pass, 12 - 13.99 is a good pass score, 14 - 15.99 is a pass with merit, and 16+ is treated as a pass with distinction. Students who score between 8 and 9.99 are entitled to write the exam again after a few weeks. In Ireland, the grading system is used to evaluate students’ performances. Students should score a minimum of 40% to pass. Grade A, B, C, D, E represents excellent, very good with few errors, good with some errors, satisfactory with many errors, sufficient respectively.

Cost of Education:

In France, the tuition fees for the undergraduate programs from a public university costs only 200 EUR per year. Medicine Studies costs 450 EUR per year and Engineering programs cost typically 620 EUR. Master and Ph. D courses are really expensive, ranging from 250 EUR for the former, and 400 EUR for the latter. Private institutions usually charge higher. In Ireland, the tuition fees depend on where you are from and where you choose to study. International students can expect to pay around between €5,000 and €10,000 per year. EU students studying at a public university don't have to pay the tuition fees. However, universities may charge a little admission fee. EU students that are not studying in public universities will have to pay the tuition fees.
