How much does it cost to study in Belgium? 

As the regions in Belgium, the tuition costs and living costs are divided into three categories – the Flemish region (Flanders), the Brussels (capital region), and the Walloon region (Wallonia). 

EU/EEA or Switzerland students may have to pay registration amounts and the studies are mostly financed by public authorities. The registration fee is around EUR850 in public institutions depending on the programs you choose.

Non-EU/EEA or Switzerland students have to pay additional registration fees depending on the program level and institution. Application fees have to pay for doctorate degrees of around EUR835 for the first year and EUR50 for the following years.

 

 

Tuition costs in Belgium 

Tuition costs in Belgium are charged based on the three main regions of Belgium –

 

- Flemish Community

The tuition cost in this region for EU students is around 50 EUR/year, whereas for non-EU international students the tuition cost in the range of 40 EUR to 1500 EUR/year. The cost varies depending on the student’s income, study program, etc.

 

- French Community

The tuition cost in this region for EU students ranges from 374EUR to 840 EUR/year depending on their income. Non-EU international students have to pay tuition fees in the range 890EUR to 4175EUR/year. 

 

- German Community

The tuition costs in this region usually range from 100EUR to 600EUR/year, so, on average most of the students pay fees around 425EUR/year.

 

  • Affordable universities in Belgium

- UC Leuven-Limburg has average tuition costs of around 1800EUR/year.

- The University of Liege has average tuition costs of around 835EUR/year.

- Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has average tuition costs in the range 835EUR to 1700EUR/year.

- The University of Namur has average tuition costs of around 835EUR/year.

 

  • Living costs in Belgium

Living costs in Belgium, like other study-abroad destinations, majorly depends on the location/cities you live in. Brussels, being the capital is the most expensive city in Belgium. The living cost would comprise mostly accommodation and food if you are going to eat at restaurants. The following are some student cities in Belgium with their average living costs: -

- Brussels and Gent have an average cost of living in the range 800EUR to EUR 950/year.

- The city of Antwerp has an average cost of living around 850EUR/year.

- The City of Leuven has an average cost of living in the range 720EUR to 820EUR/year.

- The City of Liege has an average cost of living in the range of 750 EUR to 800EUR/year.

 

  • Accommodation food and transportation in Belgium

 

- The student halls in university costs around 200EUR to450EUR/month that are considered the cheapest option for international students. Renting and sharing a one-bedroom apartment can cost 400EUR/month. Homestay can be expensive and cost in the range 400EUR to 600EUR/month for one person along with one meal a day. 

- Buying groceries is the cheapest option for covering food expenses. Supermarket shopping can cost around 150EUR/month while eating out in a restaurant can cost 7 to 12 EUR for a meal in a regular restaurant.

- For transportation, train and bus facilities are the best safest option in Belgium. A monthly student pass for public transport can cost 20 EUR/month. Other expenses like buying books can cost 35 to 50EUR/month and healthcare and insurance charges can go up to 30EUR/month.
