1. Ph.D. in Ireland

Although Ireland is a small country in comparison to the other main educational hubs of the world despite the fact, Irish Universities have created an impact on high-quality research programs and teaching methods. 2. Universities of Ireland:

The Irish Universities run in two different programs – the first one includes the National University and the member colleges while the other one includes the Technological Institutes and both of them offer a Ph.D. study. Irish Universities are mainly Autonomous which provides special training programs and research-based work in various academic fields. The major Irish Universities are present in Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Maynooth regions and are covered under the National University of Ireland. 3. Ph.D. Programme:

The Ireland Universities compliances with the Bologna Process while commencing for the Ph.D. programs which usually covers 3-4 years. In Ireland, the academic sessions mainly start from September month.

The Universities also emphasize structured Ph.D. research work which includes 4 years of study under the guidance of the Supervisors or expert and the student engagement with the enterprise partners to understand and learn skills like induction, monitoring, professional development, etc. The student has to appear in both examinations and the viva-voce to complete the Doctorate.

 

4. Fee and other Costs:

The Irish Universities decide the fee individually but on average it comes between $6000 – 10000 per year. The amount varies on other points also like the University, mode of study – whether it is full-time or part-time, areas of study like Technology, Engineering, and Science where the fee is higher in comparison to Arts and Humanities. The fee can be higher in the case of Business and Medicine subjects. Also, International students have to pay 2-3 times higher fee than the local ones.

However, the Irish Research Council runs several scholarships, funding and award schemes under various programs. There is a special support funding scheme for the students in the Agriculture and Food development and it also takes care of the various low household income students.

5. How to apply for a Ph.D.:

The international students with a Postgraduate degree can apply to the International office of the Institute directly. For Ph.D., a Master's degree is required in the specified area or subject. Any Honour's Bachelor's degree is also applicable to the Doctoral program. The non-English students have to clear the English Language Test as per the minimum score-board. The students can apply through the PAC website (Postgraduate Application Centre) with a nominal fee 50 Euro after which an identification number is generated and all the application data is submitted electronically.

6. Visa and other requirements:

Study Visa is required for the students coming from non-EU countries. All the visa applications need to be submitted via Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS). There is a residence registration process by Irish Residence Permit (IRP) for the Non-EU and EEA Ph.D. students for the study duration. This needs to be done within 90 days of the arrival in Ireland & the fee is Euro 300 per person. There are two types of services for the Immigration process in Ireland for the Dublin and Non-Dublin residents. The first category needs to register with the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service and the later one need to go with the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

International students need to have a private medical insurance cover as health insurance while the national, EU, EEA, and Swiss students are covered under the European Health Insurance Card.

7. After Ph.D.:

After Ph.D., the students can work for 12 months in Ireland under the Third Level Graduate Scheme (stamp 1G).
