Types of Student Accommodation Options In Ireland.

Essentially, you can choose between two types of accommodation- on-campus accommodation and off-campus.

1. On-campus Accommodation

As an international student, on-campus accommodation is your safest option. On-campus accommodation is generally in the form of residential halls. Students will be provided with a private bedroom; however, they will share the kitchen, sitting room, and other familiar places. On-campus accommodation is always in high demand because of the several benefits it offers.

  1. You will have access to numerous facilities provided by the university.

  2. You will always be on time for lectures and other events.

  3. You will have opportunities to socialize and make new friends.

  4. You will save on travel costs.

You must apply for on-campus accommodation when you receive the offer letter. You will have to pay the rent in two instalments.

2. Off-campus Accommodation

On-campus accommodation is usually expensive, and one has to compromise their privacy. As a result, several graduated students and second-year students opt for private housing options.

A)Shared Apartments

A shared apartment is a comfortable option for those who are on a budget. Students usually share a flat with their friends. This allows them to live on their terms with enough privacy. Rent for shared apartments is paid every month. It is mandatory to pay a deposit, which will be returned upon departure.

B. Private Apartments

Some students prefer private housing. It is a good option for those who wish to enjoy privacy. You ensure that your apartment is not too far from your university. You must also read the rules and regulations before signing the rent agreement. Students can take help from their university to finalize a suitable apartment.

C) Homestay

Homestay is a popular accommodation option among International students. This requires you to stay with a local host family. The family will provide you with a room, utilities, meals, etc.

Things to keep in mind to find the perfect accommodation.

1. Set a Budget and Follow it

Usually, international students always have a planned budget. Rent and housing are quite expensive; therefore, you must have a wise decision before finalizing your apartment/room.

2. Thorough Research

You must undertake thorough research about the location and the room/apartment you will be staying in. You should talk to the locals and your friends about the area you select and the price range in that locality. It is always better to make personal visits before signing the lease agreement.

3. Location

If you opt for off-campus accommodation, it is essential to ensure that it is within walking distance or a short ride away from your university. You must also make sure that your apartment is centrally located with enough restaurants and other facilities being within walking distance. The area and the locality must be safe and have a low crime rate.

4. Follow all the rules and regulations

Once you have finalized your dormitory or apartment, make sure you read all the applicable rules and regulations.
