CAN I STUDY FOR FREE IN NETHERLANDS? IF NOT WHAT IS THE COST OF STUDYING IN NETHERLANDS?

 

Higher education in the Netherlands is considered one of the best study abroad destinations due to its international approach and excellence. The Netherlands also has one of the largest counts of English-taught universities. Due to this, there are high numbers of international students entering the Netherlands for higher education every year. Higher education in the Netherlands is not free for international students irrespective of their origin. However, the Dutch government sponsors many financial schemes to make it affordable for Dutch students and fairly economical for international students. 

Similar to the European study system, universities in the Netherlands also offer concessions in tuition costs to EU/EEA and Switzerland citizens. Non – EU students have to pay more fees compared to EU/EEA students. The only option which would make your study effectively free in the Netherlands is applying to scholarships. 

 

Universities with Affordable tuition costs

 

But first, we will discuss the Dutch universities where you do not have to indulge in heavy financial investment. Yes, few universities offer affordable tuition costs than the other Dutch universities. Here is the list: -

Scholarships 

 

Several scholarships are listed below which will help you study free or contribute to your financial aid: -  

 

- Erasmus Mundus Scholarships: -

You can use this scholarship for pursuing courses of duration between 3 to 12 months. It covers most of your tuition fees and about EUR800 – EUR1100 of living expenses. 

 

- Holland Scholarship: -

This scholarship is specifically for countries out of the EU region. The scholarship receivers will get a EUR5000 grant during their first year of studies. So, please note that it does not cover your full tuition fees. 

 

- NN Future Matters Scholarship: -

The scholarship is applicable for students from Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Turkey, and Spain. Grant amount: EUR5000.

  

- Orange Tulip Scholarship Program: - 

The scholarship is available for students from different countries like Brazil, Russia, China, India, and Mexico. The amount of the grant varies depending on the chosen course and your country.

 

- Sino-Dutch Scholarship: - 

This is a collaborated scholarship program between the Republic of China and the Netherlands, which offers scholarships to 25 students from each country every year. Grant amount: EUR16, 113/ year.

 

- University of Maastricht High Potential Scholarships: -

The scholarship is for eligible students who want to study a full-time master's degree program. The grant amount is up to EUR17, 500 depending on your program, and covers living expenses up to EUR 23, 750 for 25 months. 

 

- TU Delft Excellence Scholarships: -

The scholarship covers full fees required for the program at TU Delft with living expenses for 2 years. You must be among the top candidates at TU delft and must have scored above 80% from an internationally recognized university.

Cost of studying in the Netherlands

 

Tuition Costs

As we discussed above, the Netherlands does not provide free education but is globally known for its affordable tuition and living costs. If you are an EU/EEA/Switzerland, or Surinam then you will have the benefits of paying lower tuition fees. These costs range between $830 - $2500/ year depending on your course (Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D.). For all other international students, the fees are comparatively higher and range from $7000 - $18,000/year for bachelors and $9500 - $24,000/year for masters degree courses in public universities. For private universities, tuition costs are higher and can go up to $36,000 / year.

 

Accommodation

Some universities provide on-campus accommodation to international students which are considered a feasible option. Another cheap option is student houses that cost $415 - $700/ month. Renting a single studio apartment can averagely cost $590 - $1200/month while a shared apartment with friends or colleagues can cost $470 - $830/month. Additional to this, you may also have to pay a deposit equal to one month's rent which is a refundable amount. All of the above costs are range depending on your location and size of rooms.

 

Food and other expenses: -

An average cost for food and groceries for a single student can cost in the range of $178 - $200/ month. Eating out in a regular restaurant can cost $12 - $24 for one meal. The expenses in big cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam can be higher than in other cities in the Netherlands. Expenses like transportation can cost $42 - $80/month, books and stationery can cost $35 - $78/month, and phone bills and internet subscription can cost $45/month. Also, for some involvement in social activities and entertainment, you can spend around $70/month. You may get some student discounts in restaurants, museums, and cinema halls. Student insurance is essential for international students that may cost $48 /month.
