1. Do Ph.D. students in Japan receive stipends?

Answer. No. Ph.D. students do not receive any stipend and also pay tuition costs for their Ph.D. degree. The tuition costs might be lower compared to other countries but still, a student pays for his Ph.D. in Japan. However, stipend in the form of government funding is available for Ph.D. students like the famous MEXT scholarships which cover university fees, return airfare, and a monthly grant of 143,000 JYN and JSPS Gakushin DC fellowship, funded by the Japanese government which provides a monthly stipend to limited Ph.D. students.

Answer. The University of Tokyo ranked 23rd in the world rankings is known for its globally recognized academics, notable alumni, and international research network. Having 15 graduate schools and 11 affiliated research institutes, there is no doubt that the University of Tokyo is considered number one in Japan. Other universities that are among the top 5 in Japan are Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Osaka University, and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

 

3. Can I study in Japan if I am working on a work permit?

Answer. Yes, you can study under a work visa in Japan, but for full-time study, you need to get permission from the immigration department. You won’t need any authorization from the immigration bureau if you are working as a research or teaching assistant. Also, you can work while studying for 28 hours per week as permitted by the Ministry of Justice.

5. Can I work off-campus while studying in Japan?

Answer. There is no restriction as such on working away from your campus. However, you should be aware of the jobs and companies you are working under. There are a lot of frauds and fake agents who may lure you into getting more pay than the basic amount and trap you into illegal affairs. As per law, you are allowed to work for 28 hours per week, so work under legal guidance (permitted from the Ministry of Justice) at a place possibly near your house and university.

 

 

6. Can I study in Japan with a scholarship?

Answer. Yes. The Japanese government has several scholarship programs for local as well as international students. These scholarships mostly cover the course fees and provide a monthly stipend to the selected students. Apart from the government-funded scholarships, there are individual universities and local organizations which provide funding to international students.

 

 

7. Which scholarships are available for international students in Japan?

Answer. MEXT scholarships, JASSO scholarships are some renowned scholarships in Japan. Other than these, scholarships from Iwate International Association, Kitami City Scholarship, and Hokkaido International Exchange & Corporation

center are some scholarships from local international associations. Aichi Scholarship Program, INPEX scholarship, and Okazaki Kaheita International Scholarship Foundation are scholarship programs for applicants residing abroad. Also, top universities like Kyoto, Osaka, Kyushu, Tohoku, and the University of Tokyo also provide scholarships for international students.

 

8. Can I study a double masters in Japan?

Answer. Universities like Kobe University, Keio University offer double master degree courses in subjects of Economics, Arts, Political Science, Media Design, Business administration, Commerce and Human Relations in collaboration with universities in countries like the USA, France, China, Australia, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Germany, and Spain.

 

9. Can I bring my family if I am studying in Japan?

Answer. As a Student, you cannot bring your family along with you to Japan. You need to first apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for a Dependent Stay Visa at the Immigration bureau in your area. The same procedure needs to be done by your family at a Japanese Embassy in your home country to make them eligible to come to Japan.

 

10. How do I get a work permit to work in Japan?

Answer. For getting a work permit, you first need to get a Certificate of Eligibility issued from the Ministry of Justice in Japan. You would also need a sponsor or employer to apply for the certificate on your behalf to the immigration office. After the certificate is issued, the application for a particular visa can be made. The documents required vary for different visas such as Engineer, Business Manager, and Highly Skilled Professional, etc. Basic required documents for work visaapplications can be Passport, Visa application, photographs, supporting documents for a specific visa, and Certificate of Eligibility.
