MIS IN IT AND NETWORKING IN THE USA

What is MIS?

A management information system (MIS) is used for decision making in organizations for managing people, processes, and data. It is an information system used for controlling, coordinating, and analyzing information in an organization. Pursuing an MIS course will help students to learn about managing various information systems which will improve and provide the needs of managers, staff, and customers in different fields.

Course details:-

? The course duration for MIS is generally around 2 years or 15 – 24 months.

? The course mainly focuses on problem-solving techniques along with business management in information technology.

? The course provides direct experience of classroom computers with studies in information systems, programming, databases, and project management.

? Most of the students go for a full-time course of 2 years but there are universities that offer part-time MIS courses.

Course Eligibility:-

? An undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university preferably in IT or CS or US comparable bachelor degree for international students.

? An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is required to enroll in MIS courses.

? In case you don’t have a relevant degree in IT then you might have to take up extra courses after joining. You may also be asked to take one or two business courses if you don’t have adequate business experience during admissions.

? A few universities may ask about your previous technical experience in web programming like knowledge of Java, JSP, etc.

? Standardized entrance exams like GRE or GMAT are required at some universities in the USA. Also, scores of English proficiency tests like IELTS or TOEFL or PTE are essential for non-native English speakers.

Syllabus:-

The curriculum in MIS courses majorly cover topics like Business Data Communications and Networking, Data Mining, Operation management, Information Technology Audit, Business Communications and Web Computing, etc. Similarly, an MIS course in IT and information systems analysis gives an understanding of system analysis and design processes focused on the systems development life cycle.

The core topics covered in the courses are:-

- project management,

- information systems planning,

- database design and implementation,

- system implementation,

- design of human-computer interface (HCI),

- requirements collection and structuring,

- project identification and selection,

- system maintenance and change management.

The course also highlights the student’s interpersonal skills where they learn the significance of effective communication with users and user systems, clients, team members, and others who are involved in the development and maintenance of the systems.

Course fees:-

The tuition cost ranges from $20,000 to $80,000/ year depending on the duration of the course and chosen university. However, there are many funding options and financial aid available for international students while applying in a US university. Also, there are many research and teaching assistantships offered in many universities with a stipend or fee waiver.

Difference between MIS and Computer Science (CS):-

- One of the major differences is that a curriculum in MS in computer science will be about studying the science behind the databases and operating systems

work, knowing technical concepts behind algorithms, programming languages, research methods, and artificial intelligence.

- However, in an MIS degree in IT, you will study managing, storing, and using information systems for the benefit of the organizations, companies, or customers.

- Basically, the difference between the two courses is that your purpose and application of the knowledge you gather changes with respect to the curriculum.

- As an MIS graduate, you will learn how to design system architecture and infrastructure, managing IT projects and managing database concepts, and all this with a business side in order to maximize the profits of the organization.
