WHERE DO I STUDY? CANADA OR THE UK?

The UK and Canada are two great places for international studies. The UK has more than fifty percent of the world’s top universities. The finest quality education, intellectualism-encouraged culture, and a ton of academic opportunities are some benefits of studying in the UK. Canada also holds a fantastic spot among the world’s top study destinations. Students looking for top universities in developed nations can find Canada as an attractive option. We will explore more differences in these two countries in this article.

Period of Terms:

In the UK, mostly, universities follow three terms. First, the Autumn term, which starts at the end of August and goes till January and the holidays start from the start of December and goes up to the end of December. Secondly, the Spring term starts in January and goes up to May, and the holidays start in early April and end at the end of April. The final term, the Summer term starts in May and ends in August. The holidays for the summer term start at the end of May and end in the middle of August. In Canada, the semester system is mostly followed and the colleges and universities go from September to April. In summer, universities that have full trimesters systems provide full courses. The winter session is separated into two terms. One starts from September and goes up to December and the other one starts in January and finishes in April.

Duration of the programs:

In the UK, it usually takes 3 years to get a Bachelor’s degree except in Scotland, where it takes 4 years to complete. In the UK, students can directly pursue Ph.D. once they have completed their undergraduate program without studying for a Master's degree. But, in the UK, people commonly study a Master’s degree before they select a Doctorate program. Since the course structure is focused and more concentrated, the duration of studies is small. In Canada, Bachelor’s degree, Master's degree, and Doctorate are three levels of degree offered by colleges and universities. Two years of study are required, additionally to the Bachelor’s degree, to get the Master’s degree. In Canada, the Doctorate takes three years to complete.

University structure and organization:

In the UK, universities still govern the colleges even though they enjoy good autonomy from the universities. For the whole duration of their studies, students stay in college. They can apply to colleges of their subject without applying to the university admissions departments. In the UK, undergraduate students apply to the central admissions department which enables them to apply to many colleges. Students are expected to know which course they want to study before they apply. In Canada, 4-year undergraduate programs are offered by universities that give students a Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree requires a study of 2 years after the first degree.

Finding accommodation:

In the UK, residence halls are provided to the students. In the UK, students don't commonly share theirs with other students but it doesn't mean that they don't share at all. Dormitories are self-catered and maid services are also available for the residence halls in the UK, however, they are chargeable. In Canada, there are homestays, dorms, and other renting options are available. Students willing to get a private renting can avail that too but the rent rate depends on the location and the luxury.

Assignments and grading system:

In Canada, the grading is dependent on the state that you are studying. But generally, the grading system starts from letter A and goes up to F, excluding E. The grade A is the highest grade and F is the lowest grade, which is a fail grade. The points corresponding to each grade differ slightly from one state to another. In the UK, assignments, home-work, and lecture-based patterns are more common. Lectures are conducted all through the semester and students are required to attend the classes without missing. Sometimes the grading depends on the end exam score.

Cost of education:

In Canada, the tuition fees for undergraduates vary on the chosen program and they are generally low. Tuition fee is around CA $18,000 (USD 14,000) to pursue post-graduation programs for international students. The tuition fees, for undergraduate programs, cost around CA $30,000 (USD 23,000) per year. Expensive courses are

Engineering and Medicinal courses whereas humanities courses cost lesser than the former courses. Management and business courses cost approximately CA $7,000 (USD 5,200) per year. In the UK, British universities charge around £11,000 ($ 14,000) per year and they charge very high for international students. In the UK, universities set the maximum tuition fees and the colleges decide their fees within the span of that fees range set by the universities.
